Take the time and use the UCAS search tool to make a shortlist of the universities and degree courses you would like to apply for through Clearing; better to be prepared than face a last-minute panic on the day!
It’s very important to write down the Clearing contact number for each university as you’ll need this to apply on the day.
Most universities invite you to complete a form to register your interest in Clearing; they’ll then send you exclusive information about Clearing places at that university, possibly including a preview of our courses available in Clearing before they’re published, and the indicative entry requirements for your preferred courses.
Also, follow your chosen universities on Twitter and other social media for up-to-the minute course vacancies on results day.
To apply for a place through Clearing you'll need to call the university directly, so have their Clearing hotline number ready in your phone.
For any questions about Clearing you can call UCAS on 0371 468 0468.
University phone lines typically open slightly earlier on A Level results day, so be ready to start dialling at 8am.
When you call any university to discuss a Clearing place they will ask for:
While some universities may offer you a place based on this information and the course availability, others will ‘interview’ you over the phone to assess your eligibility.
It’s a good idea then to have your personal statement to hand, as well as notes on why you chose this course, why you think your grades may be lower than predicted and why you want to attend this university.
Decline my place. If you have a confirmed offer but want to decline it and apply for a different course through Clearing, you need to log into UCAS Track. Click on ‘Decline my place’ to release yourself into Clearing.
You will then receive a notification to confirm you’re in Clearing.
