This central London bilingual school is popular with both native French and English speakers, as well as those who wish to learn both languages. It’s a small school of just 45 children aged two to 11 years, where students benefit from small class sizes and a close-knit, family-like atmosphere.
Founded in 2010, it belongs to a family of three schools, two in London and one in Paris. It has a city centre location and a charming premises in a Victorian house in Kensington.
The Stewart Bilingual School’s ethos is distinctive and focuses on educating “truly bilingual children”. It isn’t just about mastering the French (and English) language though; the school’s bilingual school programme exposes students to French and English culture too.
The curriculum combines elements of both the National Curriculum for England and the French national curriculum. Each class has two qualified teachers, one English, one French. This bilingual programme offers 50/50 exposure to both French and English as the daily timetable is divided equally between the two languages.
You can expect plenty of cross-curricular learning covering reading, writing, maths, science, history, geography and arts – and students leave at the end of primary well-prepared to go onto an English, French, bilingual or international school.
There is a focus on preparing CM2/ Year 6 students for the entrance exam to the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle 'Section Internationale' (a popular secondary choice for many families here); there are also tutor sessions for the 11-plus exam for many UK independent senior schools.
Beyond the academic, there are weekly music, art and PE lessons; sports include football, dance, tennis, yoga, gymnastics, and athletics. There is also a varied programme of after-school clubs including ballet, drama, chess, coding, choir, yoga, football and languages (Russian and Arabic).
Annual tuition fees for Nursery through to Year 7 are £10,200.
Good for: Popular with international families moving to or living in London, this bilingual school delivers a French-English curriculum within a small, nurturing environment. It has a fantastic city centre location, which makes it ideal for London-based families; the school also takes full advantage of its having London’s cultural attractions on its doorstep.
Not for: It’s a very small school, so will not suit those students who thrive in a larger setting. As such a small school it is limited in terms of sports and the arts, and has a very small amount of outdoor space and facilities.
