Woodlem Park School Ajman (WPS) is a CBSE curriculum school that opened on a purpose-built site in April 2017. It is currently open from KG to Grade 11 and will add its final year in April 2022. In April 2021, the school took over management of Bilva Indian School in Dubai, thus opening a second branch of Woodlem Park School in the UAE.
The Ajman school has a capacity of 5,000 students from the KG to Grade 12 with separate wings for boys and girls. Currently the school accepts admissions from KG1 to Grade 8 though students transferring from other CBSE curriculum schools may be accepted to Grades 9 and 10 based on specific terms of the admissions policy.
The school’s Vision is:
To instill a desire to be innovative
Its Mission is:
To deliver a generation of global citizens who have a compelling desire to take responsibility of the sustainability of the world;
To make learning green, fun, creative, purposeful & inclusive;
To develop an environment based on the best practices that will enable the school to meet the objectives of the national agenda and the vision of the rulers of UAE.
Introducing herself and the school, Principal Prema Muralidhar MA, MEd, MBA includes a quotation from Chuck Grassley which is design to reflect the philosophy of Woodlem Park Ajman:
"What makes a child gifted and talented may not always be good grades in school, but a different way of looking at the world and learning."
Woodlem Park School seeks to support its students by offering a high quality international educational experience where it values each student’s unique qualities and talents, developing the whole person through individualized learning.
Further, Mrs. Muralidhar explains that Woodlem Park has an in-house team of multi-skilled education professionals and staff from all over the world. Staff are chosen for their expertise in creating a motivational atmosphere for students. Teachers have a passion of teaching and a love of learning. They help students develop emotionally, academically, physically into proud citizens who possess the knowledge and skills and have a mindset to impact the world for the better.
Students come from than 10 nationalities. The school serves diplomatic families, mobile expatriate families and local families who are seeking an open-minded and creative education. Class sizes are average for CBSE curriculum schools in the UAE, with the Nursery and KG2 classes not more than 25 students and classes from Grade 1 upwards up to 30 students.
The curriculum is based on the CBSE system of education with its excellent reputation around the world as a rigorous and holistic programme. The educational philosophy at WPS supports inquiry-based, student-centred learning. The school seeks to empower its students, first by providing a safe, friendly learning environment and then "by building their self-advocacy and sense of being independent, active learners".
The curriculum focuses on six domains which include Personal, social and emotional development, Physical development, Knowledge and understanding of the world, Numeracy, Literacy and Creative development. Information technology is integrated into the curriculum to support and extend learning.
The learning programmes and syllabus ensure strong quality assurance and are periodically revised to meet changing needs and incorporate the latest developments in teaching and learning. Art, music, and sport are interwoven into the daily programme to foster development of scientific aptitude, language and numeracy skills. The curriculum encourages self-discovery, appreciates unique talent among children and builds a community of individual and collective excellence. It supports academic rigour through Project based and experiential learning.
The overall language of instruction is English. All students are taught Arabic from KG to Grade 10. As a second language WPS offers Hindi/Malayalam/French/Urdu/Tamil from Grade 1 to Grade 10 and students may opt for a third language from the same list from Grade 3 to Grade 8.
Following the commitment to an enquiry-based approach, the school offers a STEAM curriculum which utilizes Science, Technology Mathematics and arts as the key access points for guiding the student inquiry, critical thinking and speech. This programme is designed to enable students to take thoughtful risks, engage in experimental learning, collaborate, work creatively, and develop problem- solving capability.
The physical learning of students is also supported through PE classes which are scheduled age-appropriately. At least two periods are given across all grades, whilst in the Kindergarten and Primary classes, two to four periods in a week are offered.
The school has a no-homework policy, instead offering an extended day which includes co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. WPS believes that co-curricular activities such as Music, Dance, Art, Sport and club activities are essential ingredients to the development of life skills among children to help them be prepared for the challenges of the future. Students’ participation in athletics, leadership, and clubs help them interact with peers and strengthen the overall culture of the school. WPS also places emphasis on outdoor activities.
The "CATCH THEM YOUNG!" programme once a week for a period of one and half hours is spent on two optional disciplines depending on the child's aptitude and interests. This extra-curricular programme is designed to allow each student to recognise his /her interests, and help excel in his/her chosen area by ‘rigorous, joyous and many hours of creative engagement’ with peers who enjoy the same interests. These activities vary from sports disciplines to the fine Arts; linguistic to humanitarian engagement. Among the most popular extracurricular activities are: Reading Club, Sports & Games, Art & Craft, Drama Club and Music & Dance.
WPS ensures international learning objectives are defined in the students until grade 8, and tests and assessments are prepared by subject matter experts outside the school, thereby giving a lot of confidence to teachers that their delivery matches international learning styles.
Students are also prepared for International benchmark tests which are internationally administered programmes of assessment to compare the performance of students globally between the grades over time. With this, student performance can be tracked against the international standards. The tests cover mathematics, English, science Arabic and reasoning type of questions.
Students would have participated in the CBSE Grade X examinations in 2020 and 2021 (based on assessed grades as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic), but no information has been released by the school in this regard – something we would strongly encourage them to do so although exams should not be the be-all and end-all of education, they are inevitably an important factor in a parent and student’s choice of school.
Classrooms are fully equipped with smart boards and the campus is Wi-Fi enabled. All teachers have laptops and class rooms have projectors for technologically enabled learning. Specialist classrooms include those for art and music, Science and IT laboratories, and a specially equipped STEAM/Robotics laboratory.
Further facilities include a Library, Clinic and Multi-purpose hall and specific indoor and outdoor KG play areas as well as shaded outdoor spaces. The school is spread across a sprawling campus that has a football turf, Athletic track, a Swimming pool, Volley ball, Throw ball, and Badminton courts.
Little information about the popularity of the school is provided, but WPS clearly seeks to encourage parents as partners in the education and development of their children at the school. Parents are invited to be active members of the Parent Council Committee and to engage in voluntary activities.
