St. Mary's Catholic High School Experience

Anyone who has been in the UAE for some time will know of someone who has been educated at St. Mary's. Practically an institution, St Mary's, based in Oud Metha in Dubai, is home to just over 1,900 students, girls and boys, aged from 5 to 19. Unusually, the school does not offer a KG/Foundation stage, with children joining the school from a range of nurseries within the local area directly into Year 1 (the year in which they turn 6 years of age).

LET'S GO

The school is housed in a large white block building and is two storeys high with some flowering creepers and plants to decorate. The walls are high, solid white/grey and there are a few well-established trees. As it was founded in 1968 the architecture is of that era. Within the playground area is a complete shrine with a statue of the Virgin Mary and areas for prayer. There is a huge poster promoting the visit soon of a bishop to the school. The children were having their break-time and our consultant saw happy, noisy, crazy children of all ages having fun. It was certainly a busy playground area.

The school has a series of loudspeakers which they use to give directions and information to the pupils. The security guard was having a hard time, blowing his whistle and encouraging kids with mixed success to return to their lessons. Our consultant was introduced to the registrar who was polite and helpful with all information. There are a maximum of 30 children to a class and the school is proud to have 45 different nationalities in the whole of the student population. The teaching staff are also from many countries.. There is an active PTA who help out from day-to-day. There is a much-used IT suite so children are kept up-to-date with developments. There is a varied range of ECAs including choir, many sports and art.

The children come from Sharjah and Dubai. There is a much-in-demand bus service. The teachers receive a moderate amount of professional development while working at the school. Students usually go on to study at universities overseas.

Overall impression - open, busy, chaotic!
