LET'S GO

Welcome to the Kangaroo Kids Al Safa official Q and A page. Here we ask the questions, and the school answers directly. It is its chance to have its say on specific areas you have told us you want to know about. If you think there are additional questions we should be asking you may contact us here.

What qualities and characteristics would you say define your school?

Our Nursery in Dubai is a respected and trusted British Nursery in Dubai, which has been supporting families since 2005. Kangaroo Kids Nursery provides consistency and a genuine desire to offer premium learning opportunities to young children, as they take their first steps towards education. We care for children aged 2 months to 4 years with our qualified and dedicated staff in a nurturing environment. Our nursery in Dubai provides pre-school children with carefully considered learning zones, innovative facilities, and a spacious natural garden to explore. We are wholly committed to the British EYFS curriculum which is evident in all we do; teamed with a firm belief that each child is unique and can lead their own learning journey.

Learning is playful, fun; explorative and varied at Kangaroo Kids Nursery and we offer a rich program of education and activity all day long from 7:00am - 6:00pm. We provide multiple opportunities each day for children to express their ideas, make links and ask questions; as this self-led approach results in children being independent thinkers and problem solvers as they grow up.

Physical education and sport is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. How does your school ensure children engage in physical activity?

The curriculum extends all day at our nursery in Dubai until 6pm with our Extra Learning Club: the children enjoy Cookery Club, Science Club, and Yoga for Kids, Dance, Football, Ballet, Swimming lessons, Arts and Pottery. Our senior British Teachers stay until 5:30 pm to deliver the care and learning in the afternoons.

We run a variety of activities for the children every afternoon which are time-tabled and available for the parents to view. We change them each term. We have two different options planned for the children every afternoon.

We have upgraded the provision in the nursery for sport with a professional running track for children to enjoy. We believe it’s important to establish healthy lifestyle habits for the children whilst they are with us in their early years.

We were the first nursery school in the UAE to join an initiative started in Scotland in the UK called the “Daily Mile” https://thedailymile.co.uk/ (Thedailymile.co.uk). The purpose is to sup-port children being more active. Research carried out by the universities of Stirling and Edinburgh have found that 15 minutes of self-paced exercise can significantly improve a child’s mood, attention and memory (Cox,2018). The children involved will leave the classroom and run/walk for 5 minutes when a fun alarm rings. We are introducing it with our older children.

We have a large garden space of 25,000 sq.ft with a running track and the children will do a “daily lap”. We are very excited about this program and the positive impact we hope to see. Children of Determination will be actively involved and we will encourage staff and parents to also join in.

How do you promote healthy eating?

Kangaroo Kids Nursery are thrilled to partner with Leela’s lunches to provide fresh, wholesome, ready to eat hot meals and snacks for all the children in our nursery.

At Leela’s lunches, all the meals are especially formulated by Leela’s Mum, who is their nutritionist and chef. We choose Leela’s Lunches as our partner as they believe that each bite must be delicious, and bursting with goodness. This approach matches our values and healthy eating ethos in the nursery.

The guidelines they follow are simple but strict:

Wholegrains and real foods only. Which means no refined flour, sugar, artificial additives or preservatives; they use tons of fresh vegetable and fruit purees in every dish and we make everything from scratch.
Inspired by the diversity of the UAE, we are excited to introduce our nursery children to varied flavours on their plate, whilst including familiar tastes of home. The 3-week rotational menu for the term has been especially designed for us, and carefully put together with collaboration from our staff, parents; and most importantly the children.

As a parent we will send you the menu and nutritional information at the start of the term, so you are informed every step of the way.

The meals are prepared fresh every morning in their state of the art kitchen facility and delivered to the nursery in temperature-controlled vans in insulated thermo- boxes. Our nursery will receive two deliveries per day: one with breakfast, and once just before lunch time, with lunch and afternoon snacks because we want nothing but the freshest food for our little ones!

Not all schools are staffed or resourced to offer learning support to those children with either moderate or significant learning needs. To what level can you offer support for those with learning differences?

In our Nursery in Dubai our inclusion Policy is simple.

We love all children and we will always do our best to support and work with families.

We aim to provide an inclusive nursery where diversity is welcome. There are times when the additional requirements of some children may exceed our limitations; and we are happy to accept the support of outside agencies and work in partnership with families to provide children with the best outcomes. All children are different and develop at different rates.

As a British nursery in Dubai we hold the guidelines of the British Equality Act (2010) at the centre of our inclusive approach and we strive to provide a welcoming environment for all children and their families. We welcome visits from families looking to find a nursery for their child with additional needs. We continually assess and monitor children and in the event of any concerns the Nursery Principal will meet privately with parents and offer advice and develop a step by step process to enable a full assessment if needed. As a British Nursery we follow the SEND Code of Practice (2014) within the remits of the EYFS to gather information and complete observations if we feel a child is not reaching developmental milestones. In partnership with parents we would then sign-post to services available and develop an IEP Individual Learning Plan tailored to the child’s unique needs. We would then work with outside agencies to ensure the child could make progress.

There may be circumstances where a child needs extra support from a shadow teacher and we would support the family in the recruitment of a suitable professional.

We welcome visits from families who would like to discuss their child’s needs and consider ways that we can support their learning and development in our nursery in Dubai.

Are there opportunities for parents to support the learning, activities and events within the school or on trips other than through the parent group?

We are passionately committed to working in partnership with parents. We believe parents are the experts on their child and that positive relationships support children to achieve and feel happy. We are always available to chat and discuss progress or concerns, it is this personal approach that results in our families feeling relaxed and a part of the Kangaroo Kids Community. We hold several Parent/Teacher meetings throughout the year. We prefer to talk face to face and get to know your family, but this is not always easy with the demands of family life. We use emails and our Famly App to share good news, pictures and information.as well as our popular social media platforms; Facebook and Instagram. Teachers send out daily posts of updates and pictures of what the children have been learning and doing.

Every classroom has a working wall which displays the children’s interests and teachable moments that are happening within the class. There is also the children’s wow moments and next steps on display for the parents to view and see what is happening with their child’s learning. Monthly ‘learning journal days’ are held as an opportunity for parents to come in and be an active participant in their child’s learning. We run complimentary Parenting Workshops covering many areas such as Potty Training and Positive parenting, Developing language.

Finally, our parents are often seen chatting to staff on our sofas around the nursery at the end of the day, sharing stories about the children. We genuinely encourage parents to join us in the nursery, in the classroom or at special days and events.

We are especially keen to encourage parents to come and read a story, celebrate birthdays and join us on field trips. Kangaroo Kids Nursery is a community with a common goal: to ensure the children are happy, safe and secure; and a strong home/nursery relationship is the first step to achieving that

Do you offer specific activities, events or information sessions for those parents new to the school and/or area?

Supporting children and their parents is something we feel passionate about. Children are not born with a manual to guide you as parents. There are many challenges along the way. As Principal of the Nursery I run workshops to cover some of the areas that families find challenging. This is a unique service in Dubai. I have worked with many different families over the last 20 years in child care and education, these families have taught me a great deal that I’d like to share with our parents here at Kangaroo Kids Nursery.

Workshops take place during nursery hours and are informal and friendly. We serve tea and biscuits (something I consider an essential element) Many parents say they enjoy the chance to talk and share ideas with other parents. Recently we held a potty training workshop which was well attended and resulted in several of the children becoming potty trained very quickly over the next few days. I have developed some unique systems that work using practical approaches that are easy to follow.

All Workshops are complementary to our parents and run monthly.
