The WhichSchoolAdvisor team visited ICE not long after its opening in 2013.
The school day at ICE is from 8am-4pm and at the time of our visit there were 70 children, mainly in pre-KG/KG 1 and 2, with an additional class of Grade 1 and Grade 2 mixed (only 2 Grade 2 students). The school has since expanded and now accepts children up to Grade 6, and students given access to a second building opposite the original premises. In total 235 students now attend - still small by Dubai standards.
At the time of our visit 4 classes per grade, and a maximum 18 students per class. The teacher:student ratio is a very credible 1:8.
The intention is to open a College for grades 6-12 in a still-to-be built new building close to the current one. Timescale for this is approximately 4 years, as the current buildings are sufficient to cope with the anticipated numbers of students through to 2018.
The building is evidently new and purpose-built with only one section occupied currently. This includes an indoor gym area for gross motor development, a dance studio and a small unheated swimming pool. Internally it is light, airy and well-resourced for a school with relatively small student numbers. There are interactive white boards in all rooms and I-pads for student use (ratio of 1-3). There is a temporary library – this will relocate to the new building in September – and a canteen where hot meals are provided.
Currently, there is one teacher per class and although there are helpers, there was not perhaps the level of supervision that might usually be expected for children of this age-group. Classroom assistants will be added as student numbers increase.
