The Hope Centre in Al Ain was a private special needs school. The centre was established as one of five institutes in May 2001. It closed in 2013 citing financial.
Special needs education can be incredibly expensive, and a hugely admirable facet of the Al Ain Hope Centre was that parents were not refused entry based on inability to pay.
Hope Centre started as a small unit in the year 2001, when it opened its doors to children with ‘special needs’. Families were asked to pay whatever they could. This move saw many shut doors slowly open up, as parents could send their children to such centres without the pressure of paying a fee they found impossible to afford.
In the end however the Hope Center itself seems to have been unable to make it pay.
"Many parents are not able to pay the fees required for providing special needs education and restrictions have recently been put in place by the authorities regarding outside financial support. This, coupled with the difficulties experienced in employing specialist staff with the necessary qualifications and experience, has made it increasingly difficult to run the Center."
The Hope Centre catered to children with a range of mental, physical and learning disabilities and was run by a number of trained professionals. It operated with a large team of experienced speech, occupational and physiotherapists which attend to the needs of Autistic, Down’s syndrome, ADD, ADHD and learning disabilities units.
Special attention is also given to cases such as children with Cerebral Palsy.
The centre also catered to children with:
- Developmental Delay
- Down's Syndrome
- Intellectual Impairment
- Emotional Impairment
- Communication Impairment
- Physical Impairment
- Learning Disability
- Mild to Moderate Mental Retardation
Class sizes were limited to between 5 and 7 pupils according to the school's web site.
The Hope Centre’s curriculum followed the curriculum advised by the Special Needs department of the Abu Dhabi education regulator, ADEC, which includes core subjects such as English, Arabic, Math, Science, Social Science, Islamic Education, Art and Physical Education.
