How many nationalities are represented in your school?

We have currently 89 nationalities, with no dominant country.

Are there high proportions of a particular nationality?

GEMS International School goes by its name, we are an extremely international community. There are no nationality that are a higher majority than others.

What is the teacher: student ratio in your school?

We have a 11:1 teacher ratio, ensuring personalized teaching to our students.

Does your school have a waiting list?

Enrollment is currently open, however spaces are filled quickly so early enrollment is always recommended.

Describe your school's approach to education and teaching?

We focus of building a safe environment for all students and employees. We have a focus of high academics and rigor, child centered learning, developing student leaderships and outcome focused results.

Physical education and sport is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. How does your school ensure children engage in physical activity?

PE is highly regarded within the curriculum, all students partake in numerous PE lessons through the week. We have launched a program called MyHealth which is a program that is integrated into the curriculum through health and fitness testing and also included in our extensive range of Extra Curricular Activities.

How does your school promote healthy lifestyles?

Through the curriculum, the units of inquiry are centered on healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle. We participate in out of school challenges such as the 30x30 challenge and support Dubai health and fitness incentives.

How do you promote healthy eating?

Through the curriculum, the units of inquiry are centered on healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle. As well as offering well balanced and nutritious menu's in our school canteen.

Does the school have cafeteria facilities for the students?

The school has a specific catering service who supplies both healthy and nutritious meals and snacks. We have two canteens, one for grades 2 to grade 5 and the other located in our MYP building for grades 6 +. The early years student are able to pre-order hot lunch options which are delivered to their home rooms.

If yes, does it serve hot food?

Yes we serve hot, healthy options from an international cuisine.

What would be the amount spent by a student for their lunchtime meal?

Lunch meals cost between 12-17 Dirhams.

What is the starting and finishing time of your school day?

We are open from Sunday - Thursday 8:15am - 3:25pm, with an early dismissal every Tuesday at 1:00pm.

Is there a school uniform?

Yes, we have different uniforms for different sections of the school. Such as primary, secondary and DP uniforms and PE uniforms.

To accept responsibly for their own actions and reflect on their behavior.

How do you feedback progress and attainment to students and parents?

Through teacher to parent conference, student lead conferences and three-way conferences. Day to day interaction with parents, newsletters, social media and use of the seesaw application in primary years.

How often is the more formal feedback such as reports and parent/teacher meetings?

We hold parent and teacher meetings three times and Report cards are given twice a year.

What is your medium of instruction?

English is the language of instruction.

Is Arabic taught as both a first language and second language in your school?

As per KHDA requirements, Arabic A is taught to Arabic speakers and Arabic B is taught to non-native speakers. These classes are given from KG1 - Grade 12.

Which other languages are taught?

As an IB one of our key principles is to encourage and develop mother tongue languages. French and Spanish is offered from Grade 4. Our extra curricular program extends to more languages such as French, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Mandarin and more.

Do you offer EAL or TEFL support for those students where English is not their first language?

GIS offers English language support for non native English speakers, there is a dedicated ELL team at our school who works along side the subject teachers to ensure students are able to access the curriculum.

Is Islamic Education/Studies for the Arab Muslim students delivered in Arabic for them?

An Arabic education is offered in both English and Arabic for Muslim students.

Do you have a dedicated prayer room/s for the Muslim students?

GIS has both male and female prayer rooms which students and staff can access.

Do you have a learning support team in your school?

We have the following internal departments who are there to support students within the school. Achievement center, Gifted and Talented Program, School councilors PYP & MYP, ELL Program (English language learners), Guidance Counselor.

Does your school have particular expertise in dealing with a specific learning need such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, aspergers syndrome and so forth?

We have an Achievement Center, which specialises in supporting students with learning needs.

Does your school have an educational psychologist or access to one to assess and support those youngsters with more challenging learning and emotional needs?

We do have two school Counselors for our PYP students and our MYP students and also a Guidance Counselor for MYP. We also have a range of support departments including an Achievement center, Gifted and Talented program and an English Language Learners department (ELL).

Do you have a parents’ group supporting the school?

We have a Parents Association called GISPA, which stands for GEMS International School Parent Association. GISPA are very involved with parent feedback, communications, events, activities and implementing positive progress and change.

Are there opportunities for parents to support the learning, activities and events within the school or on trips other than through the parent group?

Yes, we do have an active Parent Association board who regularly assist with activities and events in the school, as well as having parent participation through our 'Home Room mums'.

Do you offer specific activities, events or information sessions for those parents new to the school and/or area?

We have yearly events at the school such as National Day, International Day, Spirit Day, etc. which parent are involved with and attend. As well as weekly 'Connect Ed' meetings where we talk through or discuss different topics, this is lead normally by the head of department or Head of School for the parents.
