The school, located between Khalifa City B and Madinat bin Zayed City behind Abu Dhabi University, was established in September 2009, and is run by Nord Anglia Education as part of its group of international schools.

Does your school have a waiting list? In which years?

Our admissions for 2022-23 are now open and we are nearing capacity in some of our year groups.

What are qualities and characteristics that define your school and its students?

The British International School Abu Dhabi is an established school offering a welcoming friendly community with the highest quality learning opportunities extending beyond the classroom. We offer the English National Curriculum in EYFS – Year 11, coupled with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in Years 12 and 13, which we believe are the finest and most developed combination of curricula available globally.

At our school your child will grow as a confident, caring individual, whilst developing the skills and attitudes required to be successful in our constantly evolving international world.

The British International School Abu Dhabi is part of Nord Anglia Education family of 78 schools worldwide. • Students at The British International School Abu Dhabi benefit from an innovative collaboration between Nord Anglia Education and The Juilliard School in New York. What percentage of your sixth form that take exams at 18 go to university, and where, in general, do they go?

95% of all our Year 13 students progress to University, the other 5% chose different paths such as travelling and military opportunities.

Do you develop independent learning through homework and, if so, what are your recommendations regarding this, particularly time spent on homework?

The amount of homework differs from year group to year group and is dependant on how appropriate it is for the topic or curriculum area.

Physical education and sport is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. How does your school ensure children engage in physical activity?

As well as normal PE curriculum lessons we also offer a swimming lesson every week for every child up to Year 3 and then termly for all other year groups. And with so many different sports and activities on offer we ensure we have something for everyone to take part. We hold annual triathlons and duathlons which are whole school events. Even in the Summer months, where possible we ensure our students are able to run around within our many shaded areas.

How does your school promote healthy lifestyles?

We promote health & wellbeing throughout our whole student and parent community and engage outside normal curriculum requirements. With our own Sports Academy we are able to host many co-curricular activities such as; trampolining, dance, gymnastics, badminton and lots more to entice everyone to engage in a form of excercise outside of the school day. Our Parent, Teacher Association also hold many coffee mornings and workshops for the wider community to educate, share and advise.
As part of our collaboration with the UN and to support the world's Sustainable Development Goals, one of the goals we chose to work towards as a school is the 'Good Health & Wellbeing' goal which has been enbedded into our curriclum with many activities.

How do you promote healthy eating?

We provide guidance to all our parents of what should be in packed lunches and ensure we serve balanced and healthy options in our dining hall. Teachers are always on hand to support healthy choices for Primary and Secondary children when they are choosing their snacks and lunch.

Does the school have cafeteria facilities for the students? How does it promote a balanced diet?

We have both Primary and Secondary dining rooms and use a catering company that understands BIS Abu Dhabi's health and well-being vision and does not serve or sell food of low nutritional value.

What is the approximate average cost of a lunchtime meal?

We offer combination meals for AED15 - AED20

We have a discipline policy in line with ADEK guidance.

How do you feedback progress and attainment to students and parents?

Regular communication is maintained and encouraged throughout the academic year with both student and parent.

How often is the more formal feedback such as reports and parent/teacher meetings?

We provide four reports per academic year for each student and one parent/ teacher meeting per term.

Which languages are taught at your school - please detail any as a first as well as second language?

Arabic, Spanish, French & German.

In addition, we also offer Korean and Mandarin at IB Diploma level

Do you offer EAL or TEFL support for those students where English is not their first language?

We have an excellent EAL department that supports our students in one-to-one and group sessions and offer specialist support to our teachers to be fully inclusive.

Do you offer a dedicated prayer room/s for students? For which faiths?

Yes

How do you support gifted, able and talented students?

Every child is challenged and for those students who show exceptional ability in subjects are challenged and nurtured further to achieve all that they can.

Do you have a learning support team in your school?

We have an exceptional Learning Support team

Not all schools are staffed or resourced to offer learning support to those children with either moderate or significant learning needs. To what level can you offer support for those with learning differences?

We are unable to offer support for children with significant learning needs.

Does your school have particular expertise in dealing with a specific learning need such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, aspergers syndrome and so forth?

We have a whole range of expertise within our Learning Support team

ADEK only allow pre-approved adults/ parents to support with children.

We have parents on our Board of Governors

The school hosts 'welcome coffee mornings' every month as well as introducing the family to other families based on nationality, likes and interests.
