Al Arqm is a Private School located in Al Barsha, Dubai that serves a predominantly Emirati community (just under half of students come from local families). The school follows a Ministry of Education curriculum, and currently is rated Weak by the KHDA, a rating it has held now for four years.
Al Arqm has been rated Acceptable for the third year in a row in the 2018-19 KHDA inspection process. An abbreviated inspection report can be found under the Inspection report tab. An update to this review will be completed once the full report has been published.
The story so far...
According to the KHDA, at Al Arqm Private School, the majority of lessons observed are unsatisfactory, are "excessively controlled by the teachers and lacked clear learning points and active student engagement."
The UAE MoE curriculum school teaches from KG (3 years of age), to Grade 12 (18 years of age). It currently has over 1000 students, boys and girls, with 81 teachers, giving it one of the higher teacher to student ratios - however less than one in two actually have a teaching qualification.
Al Arqm focuses on providing a strong Islamic ethos - noted by the KHDA, and in parent comments about the school. Students’ understanding and appreciation of Islam and the traditions and culture of the UAE were rated Good by the KHDA. In other areas, attainment, teaching and behaviour were said to be more variable and in some cases unsatisfactory, although girls seem to do better in all the areas than boys.
Academically, both KG and Cycle 1 are deemed unsatisfactory across core subject areas (English, maths, science as well as Arabic). At Cycle 2 and 3 they are considered satisfactory. Teaching, quality of student learning and assessment is largely unsatisfactory - pretty much across the board. The quality of curriculum is deemed unsatisfactory at KG and Cycle 1, and just satisfactory in Cycle 2 and 3.
Health and safety, pretty much a minimum requirement of any school, is also deemed unsatisfactory at Al Arqm. Leadership is also deemed unsatisfactory.
Girls are split from boys for various teaching activities at Al Arqm. Boys seem to benefit more from extra-curricular activities than girls: A range of school trips, for example, was not available to the girls section.
The school's website is in Arabic with no English translation. Fees for Al Arqm Private School range from 7,608 AED for KG 1 to 12,801 AED for Grade 12.
