UAE schools are flying their flags at half mast as the nation begins forty days of official mourning upon the announcement of the passing of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, on Friday May 13.

Work at government ministries and departments, as well as private sector organisations, will be suspended for three days, starting Saturday.

Dubai's KHDA have amended an earlier announcement, now stating that:

"Schools, universities, early childhood centres and training institutes will be closed on Monday, reopening on Tuesday next week. "

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan served as the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi since 3rd November 2004. He was the second President of the UAE and the 16th Ruler of Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
