It is a full Fri-yay! for Sharjah, at least for its government employees, with a three-day weekend confirmed from Jan 1st, 2022.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will become the new weekend, a half day longer than peers in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, which this week moved to a 4.5 day working week - half day Friday, Saturday and Sunday becoming the weekend.
The decision was made as per directives issued by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.
Sharjah's government employees will work from 7.30am to 3.30pm during the working week.
No specific mention has made for schools or the private sector in Sharjah.
Abu Dhabi and Dubai's education regulators, ADEK and the KHDA respectively, confirmed schools in the two emirates would follow the federal directive.
SPEA, Sharjah's equivalent body, has yet to comment.
Schools across the emirates were caught by surprise by the change, and are currently reworking schedules for a shorter week. Many are waiting for additional directives from the Ministry of Education and local regulators before announcing how curriculum demands can be met, but increased school days are being mooted by many as the only viable solution.
