Cambridge Assessment International Education has launched a Scholarship Scheme for Cambridge Outstanding Learners in collaboration with universities in the UAE, Egypt and Jordan.

The scholarships will reward top Cambridge learners in the MENA region, offering them a reduction in tuition fees under three scholarships programs: Cambridge Top of the World Winners, Outstanding Cambridge Learners and High Achievers.

Under the scheme outstanding Cambridge International students will be able to apply for academic scholarships that will support 50% to 100% of their first year university tuition fees.

The financial amounts awarded will depend upon which Cambridge Outstanding Learner Award the student won. For example, Top in the world award winners will be able to apply for a 100% scholarship at any of the universities participating in the scheme.

UAE universities that have partnered with Cambridge International to provide students with the scholarships include Amity University Dubai; Middlesex University Dubai; Curtin University, and Heriot-Watt University.

The news comes at at a time when the UAE in general, but Dubai specifically, is promoting itself as a destination for tertiary education. Traditionally students have left the United Arab Emirates at eighteen to study in the UK, US, Canada, Australia and in Continental Europe.

The prize for the emirates is a slice of a very large and profitable pie. Overall, international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities contributed $39 billion and supported 455,622 jobs in the 2017-18 academic year according to NAFSA. UK universities generated £95 billion for the country’s economy and support more than 940,000 jobs across the nation, according to an analysis from Universities UK.

The UK figures, from 2014-15. included more than just the contribution from international students.

Preventing students leaving is an issue shared by many countries. The largest outbound mobile student flows by origin by 2020 are expected to be China (585k), India (296k), South Korea (134k), Germany (100k), Turkey (84k), Malaysia (82k), and Nigeria (67k). Students currently head for the US (582k), UK (331k), Australia (277k), Canada (176k), and Germany (155k).
