ADEC has published its 2015/16 sector overview, highlighting Abu Dhabi's sector trends and developments.

In total, there are now 186 schools in the Emirate, with 116 in Abu Dhabi region, 58 in Al Ain and 12 in Al Gharbila.

The Emirate continues to see inward investment in the education sector with 11 new schools (offering around 20,000 new seats) coming on-line for the 2015/16 academic year and a further 9 new schools with 22,000 new seats opening in 2016/17.

Across Abu Dhabi there are currently: 49 Ministry of Education Schools, 45 American Schools, 42 British schools, 27 Indian, 19 ‘others’ and 4 SABIS schools.

In total, there are approximately 236,000 school students in the Emirate.  Of these, 76 percent are expat while 24 percent are Emirati.

Almost a quarter of Abu Dhabi school students (24 percent) attend US curriculum schools, a further 23 percent attend British curriculum schools, 22 percent attend Ministry of Education schools, 18 percent go to Indian schools, 5 percent study in SABIS schools and a further eight percent study in various other curricula schools.

Fees in Abu Dhabi are considerably cheaper than those in Dubai.

Currently, 34 percent of students attend schools where the fees are ‘very low’ (under AED 10,000).

A further 24 percent attend schools with fees termed ‘low’ (AED 10,000 to AED 19,000), while 24 percent attend schools with ‘medium’ fees (AED 20,000 to AED 29,000).

Eighteen percent of students study in schools with fees considered ‘high’ and premium, (AED 30,000 to over AED 50,000 per year.)

ADEC anticipates that the sector will continue to grow through to 2021.

The Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) for expats is around 5 percent, while that of the Emirati population is one percent higher at 6 percent.

Over the past year, ADEC has overseen the implementation of the new UAE wide inspection framework, the training of 21 new Emirati school inspectors, launched a staff information system which has already been used over 6,000 times and undertaken various research studies across the region.
