LET'S GO

As we explained in our article published on the eve of the official results day, if this year's A Level and BTEC results are anything to go by, a downward correction in grades awarded to UAE students compared with 2021 is equally likely to affect GCSE and IGCSE results. The Exam Regulator has been open about the need to 'deflate' the grades awarded from the highs of the last two pandemic years.

And whilst this may not affect students in the UAE moving into Sixth Form in quite the same way as those who were leaving school for university, or further educational and career pathways, GCSE and IGCSE results are important. For most UAE students, the results will determine what subjects they are able to continue at A Level, BTEC or IB, and in the future, these results may well be taken into account for further education applications.

Before you go onto to study the details of the achievements of our I/GCSE students this year, we would strongly recommend that your read our article explaining how to decipher the results and what to look for in results reporting.

Last Thursday’s A Level results awarded in England, Wales and Northern Ireland revealed top grades down by 8.4 percentage points on  2021’s record results, with A* awards alone decreasing by 4.5 percent. A similar picture is expected for this year’s GCSE and IGCSE examinations with a record fall expected this week.

However, it's definitely not all 'Gloom and Doom'!

It was apparent on A Levels day, that the results of UAE schools surpassed those of the UK, with UAE school groups and schools, including GEMS Education and Taaleem, reporting that the difference between last year's grades and the exam results this year was not significant. The majority of students achieved their predicted grades – in large part because many UAE schools appear to have been more conservative in the marking in 2021.
