The announcement of the closure of Westminster School in Dubai has sparked a social media campaign by students to save the school.

“The Westminster school is closing in 2014! We want to #Save Our School and #KeepTWS !” says the Twitition. (a petition on Twitter)

The school's operator, GEMS, announced in an email sent to parents earlier this week that the school, which currently has 4,800 students and is based in Al Qusais, would shut down in June 2014.

The company said the average increase in fees per year at the school had been too low to make running the school cost-effective.

More than 150 signatures had been collected for the online petition in its first two days of operation.   A Twitter account has also been set up by students (@official_TWS) where individuals concerned about the situation have posted strong comments.

Current fees at Westminster School range from between 5,000 AED to 10,000 AED per year - far below the GEMs average.
