A survey of teachers across the UAE has highlighted particular challenges for American School teachers with 6 in 10 actively seeking employment elsewhere. Worse, almost 9 in every 10 (86%) teachers said they would consider leaving the UAE to another country if a better opportunity came up.
Teachers working in UAE schools are in general well educated and qualified and therefore able to better able to move on: 52% of respondents in American schools claim to hold a Masters level degree.
As part of the survey, one teacher told WhichSchoolAdvisor.com: “I expected the management structure would be more pleasant and transparent and the cost of living lower than it has proven to be. I expected to be able to make a bigger saving than I can in reality.”
In total 48% of teachers working in US curriculum schools left their previous position (48%) for a new challenge and a better salary (45%). According to the survey, for the majority of respondents, neither has been delivered by their school in UAE.
As a result, teachers are flighty listing Qatar, the United States and Australia as their most desirable destinations after the UAE. Teachers believe these countries offer more attractive salaries and a better standard of living.
American Curriculum schools are a top choice for UAE parents in Abu Dhabi, with 16% compounded annual growth rate in student enrollment. However, US schools are at-risk of losing key staff who are not satisfied with their salary packages.
Over one in four (28%) of American curriculum survey respondents receive 8000-12,000 AED per month.
Salary was highlighted as the primary area their school did not deliver on followed by career development: Over three quarters of respondents (77%) said they would stay in their current position if the salary were improved. Just under half (45%) said they did not receive a salary increase last year.
Co-Founder of the UAE Learning Network, Kevin Simpson said, “In order to attract and retain high will and high skill American curriculum educators it is important to ensure they are compensated appropriately and engaged in ongoing professional development.
"American style education is in high demand by parents. We hear their needs and now is the time for operators and school leaders to act,” he added.
