Up to 100 new private schools will be required in Abu Dhabi over the coming seven years to cope with increasing demand, according to a spokesman for ADEC, Abu Dhabi's education regulator who was quoted in recent media reports. At present there are 183 private schools in the emirate attended by around 185,000 children. 70 percent of these schools are currently oversubscribed.
The announcement by Abu Dhabi authorities in September that all government employees must live in the emirate is expected to put additional strain on the private school system.
ADEC estimates that an additional 3 to 4 billion AED needs to be spent to develop around 146 new schools and believes that the opportunities available will attract 'quality investors'.
Abu Dhabi Indian School is planning to open a new school in Mohammed bin Zayed City later this year which will accommodate more than 4,000 pupils and another two schools, the Rabeeh Primary and Royal Academy will host between them up to 3,600 pupils when complete.
