Jump here to the table below - but we recommend that you read about the overall outcomes globally and in the UAE first, to put the results in context.
According to the IBO, 179,917 students worldwide are due to receive their Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP) results, following exams in May 2023.
Latest data from the IBO shows that 2,492 students from 48 UAE schools participated in the IB examinations in May 2023. Once again, UAE students have exceeded the global average Diploma Programme score of 30.24 points, with 31.97 points. 177 UAE students achieved 40 points or more (approx. 2.3% of the global figure of 7,680).
This global score compares with an average of 31.98 in 2022 when students returned to examinations following the Covid 19 pandemic, against 32.98 in 2021, when students received Teacher Assessed Grades. The global average in the last full set of examinations taken by students in 2019 (pre-Covid) was 29.62, which was actually a lower average than those of 2018 of 29.76.
As impressive is the UAE overall pass rate of 89.7%. The global average pass rate has fallen to 79.3% - a fall of 6.3% compared with 2022. With a return to pre-pandemic 2019 grade boundaries, there has been a steep drop from 85.6% in 2022. Despite this significant drop, it is still higher than the global pass rate in 2019 of 77.4%. The average global Diploma Programme grade achieved for 2023 was 4.84/7. In the UAE, it was 5.08/7 - a full 0.25 higher.
In a statement from the International Baccalaureate Organisation released today, they noted;
"In line with other national and international awarding organisations, the profile of grade distribution returned close to pre-pandemic standards. This return to established distributions of awarded grades is aligned with university expectations and has been a phased process: results for the May 2022 and November 2022 examination sessions were closer to the results of 2019 than those of 2021". The 2023 average, however, still remains 0.60 points above the 2019 average of 29.62.
DP (Diploma Programme) and CP (Careers-Related Programme) results have now been released to schools. Students can access their results directly on the IB's website on Thursday 6th July, using a login pin provided by the school's IB coordinator.
GEMS Education was the first school group to announce its students' successes. A total of 605 Grade 12/Year 13 students from seven GEMS schools sat exams for the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), up from 533 last academic year. With an average point score of 32.8 and a pass rate of 92 per cent, GEMS students once again outperformed world averages from last year. One student, from GEMS Wellington International School in Dubai, achieved the highest score possible of 45.
In addition to the IBDP results, 28 GEMS students from GEMS International School – Al Khail and GEMS Wellington International School also entered the IB Career-related Diploma. The two schools recorded a strong overall pass rate of 92 per cent and an average IB subject score of 3.9.
The 9 students at GEMS Wellington International School achieved an overall pass rate of 88% with an average IB subject score: 4.25. 19 students at GEMS International School - Al Khail achieved an overall pass rate of 94% with an average score of 3.75.
The second group to announce its results was Innoventures Education, whose IB curriculum schools include Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills, Dubai International Academy Al Barsha, Raffles World Academy and Collegiate International School.
Overall Innoventures 205 students achieved a 98.5% pass rate across the group with an average points score of 34. Emirati students achieved a 100% pass rate. One student achieved the top mark of 45 points, whilst three students attained 44 points and two students attained 43 points. 27 students scored 40 and above. Details of the individual IBDP results can be found in the table below.
Taaleem, which operates five IB curriculum schools in the UAE, also shared its group results.
248 Taaleem students at Greenfield International School, Jumeira Baccalaureate School, Raha International School The Gardens and Uptown International School achieved an average point score of 33, and a 94.6% pass rate, with the highest individual score from Greenfield International School of 45 points. Taaleem also had 20 students who were entered for the IBCP (the Careers-related Programme), all of whom achieved a pass qualification. Details of the individual school IBDP scores and pass rates can be found in the table below.
Probably the last UAE school to publish its results (at least in part) was North London Collegiate School Dubai, which used Social Media, three weeks after the results were announced, to advise that their students had received an average score of 37 points - placing them as equal highest scorer, together with Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches, with their cohort of 98 students.
Having proudly stated that they had been the leading school in the UAE in 2022, it was not altogether surprising to see NLCS Dubai at the top of the table in 2023. However, although the school revealed that their top point score was 45 points, no other data was provided.
It is not known how many students sat the examinations, (images of their graduation ceremony, also on Social Media, suggest around 20) and there is no information about the percentage of results which were awarded 30+, 35+ and 40+ points - statistics which the International Baccalaureate Organisation use.
We would like to encourage NLCS Dubai, and other schools who hold back data, to show the level of transparency that so many others are now providing, giving parents the chance to see for themselves how schools perform across a range of criteria.
This page will be live and updated with results as we receive them from the IBO and individual schools.
The IBDP results table 2023 is below. This includes the results shared with us directly, together with those published on Social Media.
One of the more interesting features of the data provided by UAE schools this year has been the withholding in a number of cases of either the % pass rate, or indeed the overall point score and pass rate.
WhichSchoolAdvisor.com urges schools to be transparent about their examination results, as we believe it is an important factor for parents in making decisions about their choice of school - an important one, but certainly not the only one. Withholding data, though, does raise the question as to how open a school is likely to be in its efforts to be transparent with potential members of the school community.
