BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council – named after the body which first governed them) were once, wrongly, considered an inferior qualification to traditional GCSE or A Levels and an option for students of less academic ability.
These days, BTECs are viewed for what they really are – vocational qualifications which offer real-life skills and endless possibilities for students who have a particular passion or career path they want to pursue. The unsung heroes of the academic world, BTECs are also great for students who struggle with exams and prefer coursework/practical tasks, offering a hands-on educational alternative.
Offered at various levels – from entry-level courses to advanced diplomas – and covering a wide range of subjects including business, engineering, travel and tourism, healthcare and creative arts, BTECs are designed to prepare students for the workforce by equipping them with industry-specific expertise.
They are highly regarded by employers and can also serve as a pathway to further education with BTEC Level 3 equivalent to an A Level, and Levels 1 and 2 equivalent to GCSEs. Students are awarded grades ranging from a ‘Starred Distinction’ to a ‘Pass’.
More and more universities are accepting applications from students with Level 3 BTECs or a combination of BTEC and A Level (it’s worth checking on each university website to check what their specific requirements are).

Brentwood School
Brentwood School gets the best of both worlds – being in the centre of town but also surrounded by gorgeous Essex countryside. The school offers three pathways at sixth form to ensure that students are placed on courses that best match their abilities and interests.
Alongside A Levels and the IBDP, Brentwood also offers BTEC Extended Diplomas in Sport and Business. The sport pathway is fully supported by some exceptional sports facilities at the school, including a sports centre with swimming pool, acres of sports pitches, cricket pavilion, fencing salle, athletics track and netball/tennis courts, a dedicated sports hall. There's also growing interest in the business pathway, where students learn about sole traders, how a PLC is structured, and all of the options in between. All BTEC students also take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and undertake a work experience placement linked to Sport or Business.
In 2023, all BTEC Extended Diploma students achieved the equivalent of AAA or higher at A Level. The cohort accepted places to a range of destinations including Plymouth and Kent to study courses as diverse as Architecture, Politics and International Relations, and Physiotherapy.

At Fifth Form, all students study English, Maths GCSE along with a Science GCSE/ BTEC and can add from a range of further subjects.
