Oxford University has just announced it will join with a whole host of other top name universities to offer free online courses.

The courses are available via the free online education platform Mooc which has been in operation since 2011.

The system allows millions of students around the world completely free access to short courses with some of the world's best universities, including; Stanford, Harvard, Caltech, Sorbonne, Peking and now of course, Oxford.

Oxford will offer a new Economics course in partnership with edX an online learning platform founded by Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The course, From Poverty to Prosperity: Understanding Economic Development, will commence in February 2017 and be led by Sir Paul Collier, professor of economics and public policy at the Blavatnik School of Government.

According to the World Economic Forum, Mooc platforms such as Coursera, edX and Udacity in the US and FutureLearn in the UK have partnered with hundreds of universities, nonprofits and institutions over the past few years. In 2015 alone, Coursera had a staggering 17 million students registered.
