The United Nations Children’s Fund, or Unicef, has named Sharjah the most child friendly city in the UAE for its promotion and protection of children’s rights.

The recognition came at a special session for Sharjah’s children and youth held at the Consultative Council of Sharjah, in the presence of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah.

Sharjah has been crowned the first city in the world to receive the UN’s prestigious title and comes after the emirate met new international requirements and criteria launched by Unicef’s global CFC initiative.

Three years ago Sharjah was named a ‘Baby-Friendly City’ by the UN and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Dr Shaikh Sultan said:

“Our key goal has been, and always will be, to provide the sound foundations for a society where everyone can participate in shaping a future that fits their ambitions and ours. And in spite of the technological evolution and changing tools of labour, it is the human who will determine the direction and progress of societies and civilisations through ideology and determination.”

Sharjah’s selection was based on a number of factors, including respectful and equal treatment of every child by society and all authorities.

Other stipulations for the award were that children have the right to grow up in a safe and clean environment, have access to basic services, and can play, can learn and grow where their voice is heard and matters.
