The American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) is planning an extensive 10 year expansion plan costing in the region of Dhs 100 million.

The ambitious project will see the university increase capacity from the current 900 students to between 5000 and 7000 when completed.

AURAK's president, Prof Hassan Al Alkim told Gulf News, “we’ve achieved a lot," he said. "It’s not all we want, but we are growing according to our plan. Three years back we were in the 200s [of students] and now we are more than 900."

AURAK's reputation has developed on the back of its niche courses such as petroleum engineering coupled with exceedingly competitive fees.

An average course at AURAK costs around Dhs45,000 per year- approximately half of that charged by other universities in the UAE.

"We want to make Ras Al Khaimah a destination for education," says Prof Al Alkim. "Many universities started in very small villages and then the village becomes built around the university, and it becomes a city because of this spillover."
