Dubai Solar Schools Project Set To Launch
Ten Dubai private schools accommodating over 19,000 students will launch a new roof-top solar panel project, it has been revealed.
The first schools to sign up for the project are: The School of Research Science, Deira International School, The Winchester School, Star International, The University of Modern Sciences, Oxford School, Al Dar University College, The Apple International School, The Indian Academy and Al Ittihad Private School Jumeirah.
The initiative called 'Dubai Solar Schools' was created by dubai-solar.org, which hopes to have over 100 schools on-board by 2020.
The project is part of the DEWA 'Shams Dubai' regulation, which will see Dubai begin to diversify its energy mix with the addition of renewable energy sources.
Dubai Solar Schools initiative hopes to bring education institutions into the regulation and capture the imagination of today's students.
The project will utilise a leasing system, ensuring the schools require no capital to start the programme and it is expected that those participating will not only dramatically reduce their DEWA bills, but in some cases negate them completely.
Speaking to Khaleej Times, managing director of dubai-solar.org, David Provenzani said he believed each school could potentially generate approximately 500kW of power, totalling 50mW across all the schools once the project is fully operational.
