How well are schools that say they are following the British curriculum in Dubai, doing so?

That's the question the independent "British Schools Overseas" (BSO) assessment will soon answer following an agreement between the UK's and the emirate's education authority.

Schools wanting to take part must be able to demonstrate that their curriculum and ethos are related to British culture. If they meet the standards, they will be recognised by the DfE [Department for Education of England].

The availability of the assessment will have a bearing on how an institution in the UAE can label itself: If a school wishes to be classified as British, it should volunteer for the BSO, says Fatma Belrehif, head of the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB).

"Parents will have unbiased, accurate evaluations as to whether or not their children's schools are providing the same standard of education as independent schools in England," says Belrehif.

It is not yet clear however whether British schools will be added to UK independent school league tables based on the assessments.

The deadline to register for BSO inspections for the coming academic year is June 15.

Hi Stephen, apologies for any confusion. The KHDA leadership team's profiles may be found here. Jameela Al Muhairi is indeed the current head of the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau.
