Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), the emirate's education regulator, has taken over a private school Al Worood Academy, a British/American curriculum private school, ahead of its closure from next academic year, following the death of a kindergarten pupil on one of its school buses.

The KG-1 pupil died on October 7 after allegedly being left locked inside the bus for several hours. Abu Dhabi Educational Council ordered the closure of the school with effect from August 31, 2015.

In a release published yesterday Dr Amal Al Qubaisi, Adec’s general manager, said in its closure order: “The school shall cooperate with Adec or any agency or person representing Adec in matters related to conducting the school’s business until the school’s licence is revoked.

“This includes, for example, offering full support to transfer existing students to other schools and non-prejudice to the acquired rights of others.”

Al Worood was founded in 1982, and has 2,200 pupils in primary and secondary education.
