A small group of expatriate parents in Abu Dhabi has been given permission by ADEC to pay their school fees for the current term in installments, according to a report in the Arabic daily newspaper Emarat Al Youm.
The fees will be paid over four months and ADEC has teamed up with an unnamed charity organization to facilitate payment. Figures for the number of parents involved in the programme were not released but ADEC stated that the number of students who couldn't pay tuition fees on time was below 1,000 pupils in total.
Parents who applied to ADEC for assistance had their applications reviewed and an unspecified number of these were rejected. The successful parents had to supply a written undertaking to pay the arrears according to terms set out by the regulator.
According to a recent study conducted by WhichSchoolAdvisor.com 87 percent of parents in the UAE admitted that funding school fees caused them financial hardship. 20 percent of parents admitted that they had taken loans to pay fees.
