Academics Launch 'Stinging Attack' on UK Curriculum

A group of leading British professors of education have launched a stinging attack on changes being made to the UK national curriculum by the current UK government.

In a letter to  'The Daily Telegraph', a British daily newspaper, the academics claim that pupils’ education will be damaged at an early age because lessons will place an overemphasis on memorising “endless lists of spelling, facts and rules”.

In the letter it is claimed that the Government’s approach runs counter to systems employed by some of the highest-achieving countries in the world such as Finland which place a greater emphasis on problem-solving, critical analysis and creativity.

The dons from universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, King’s College London, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham claim that focusing on facts and knowledge – at the expense of skills – could “severely erode educational standards”
