A total of 5,200 teachers and educational leaders sat for Teachers Licensing tests on Saturday, The Ministry of Education said on Twitter.

February 2018 saw the launch of the Dubai teacher licensing programme, an initiative that aims to license all of Dubai’s teachers. The programme began in 2016 with a pilot study conducted with 224 teachers across 15 schools. All teachers are expected to be licensed by the Teachers Licensing System (TLS) by 2021.

According to federal UAE Ministry of Education figures there are a total of 70,845 education professionals in the country.

UAE MoE based based Cycle 3 Arabic, English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology teachers in public and private high schools across the UAE took Saturday’s tests.

The specialised tests taken by the teachers are related to the specific subjects they teach.

The next set of assessments will be "professional exams", which will help the ministry to understand teachers’ level of professionalism, their grasp of pedagogy and classroom management skills.

The assessments also attempt to determine a teacher's ability to incorporate the UAE’s heritage and values into his or her instruction.

The next set of exams are planned to be held early in the coming 2018-19 academic year.

Teachers who pass both specialized and professional exams will earn a UAE teachers’ licence, which will be valid for one to three years, depending on the qualifications, test scores and experience.

There will be two chances to retake the tests for teachers who do not pass the assessments. The retakes can be done after attending the ministry-approved training, which will vary according to how the teachers performance in the exams.
