Abu Dhabi, which is already facing a major crunch across all curricula, could be facing an even larger problem with the potential closure of 17 schools in the emirate.  Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has put the schools on 'final notice', according to an  interview the Arabic daily newspaper Emarat Al Youm has published with a senior executive from the organisation.

The 17 schools account for almost one tenth of all private schools in Abu Dhabi as the number of private schools currently operating in the emirate is 183.

“These schools have been given a last chance to redress their position and improve performance after they have failed to meet requirements over the past six years,” Hamad Al Dahiri, Director of the Private Schools sector at Adec said.

“We have found that those 17 schools have failed to achieve even the minimum level of the council’s criteria.

In case they fail again to meet conditions, we will take measures against them and these may include terminating the school’s director and its closure.”

Mr Al Dahiri gave no time frame for the potential closure of the schools.
