With school fees in the UAE breaking the 100,000 AED barrier for the first time in 2015, perhaps it is no surprise that sums being spent on extra-curricular tuition are rising too, however the amounts being spent should be.

According to a poll running on WhichSchoolAdvisor.com, 12% of respondents are now spending more than 4,000 AED a month - 52,000 AED per year on out of school tuition - higher than many school fees, and one half again for those at the most expensive UAE school.

Given the cost of private tuition is between 100 - 200 AED per month, it also means children are spending up to 40 hours of additional time getting tutored each month over and above schooling.

The questions parents, and schools, should be asking themselves is why they feel the need to spend money on after school tuition at all. Only 12% of respondents said tuition was the job of the school, while a further 17% said they did not spend money on tuition, but gave up their own time to work with their children.

The most common amount spent on extra tuition is between 500 and 1,000 AED per month (18% of respondents), followed by between 1,000 and 2000 AED (14%).
