Al Wathba is a large area located close to the Abu Dhabi to Al Ain highway, approximately a 40 minute drive from the centre of Abu Dhabi.
Originally a small village, surrounded by desert, camel farms and a nature reserve, the area has been developed on each side of the highway with a range of industrial areas and labour camps on one side and mixed residential areas, consisting of apartments and independent villas, on the Al Wathba South side.
On the edge of Al Wathba South, there is also a popular cycle track which offers various rides of between 8-30km. It is flood-lit, surfaced and also attracts runners.
The wetland is considered one of the UAE's "hidden gems", but you probably need to be a bird watcher and lover to really appreciate it. It does however offer an escape from the city and into nature for a few hours.
