An eco-friendly international school has opened in Phuket, offering an affordable education to parents looking for a British or French curriculum. BCIS Phuket opened Phase 1 of the school in September 2017, with 300 places for children from kindergarten through to secondary. It plans to reach its full capacity of 1,100 students since opening a further two phases of the school in September 2018.
BCIS Phuket offers a very uniquely green education to the families of Phuket. Here’s a school that has solar panels, waste management facilities, and permaculture systems to help engage students in eco-friendly issues. It also has its own horticulture research centre complete with a nursery, garden centre, and labs.
The curriculum
The school follows the National Curriculum for England, offering a well-rounded education to students from nursery to Year 13. The school offers an IGCSE programme to Year 10 and Year 11 students as a precursor to the Cambridge-approved A Levels, which are available to study in Years 12 and 13.
Located in Chalong, on the east coast of Phuket, BCIS Phuket is one school with three streams of education. BCIS Phuket is one of only a few French schools in Thailand. It follows the French National Curriculum as directed by the French Education Department, with classes from Maternelle to Terminale. The school also offers an English stream based on the Cambridge curriculum, which works towards IGCSEs and A Levels, as well as a Thai-English curriculum in every year group.
The early years programme at BCIS Phuket, which runs from the baby centre at 10 months until KG2 for 5-year-olds, follows the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage. This focuses on communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, maths, global awareness, and art and design.
The campus
BCIS Phuket is still very much a school in the making. It opened with a 4,000 sqm campus which features classrooms; a science lab; computer, art, dance, and music rooms; outdoor and indoor play areas; athletics track; and a multi-sports complex.
The school has now expanded its 20,000 sqm campus to include more classrooms, science labs, an auditorium, recording studio, and a library. It also has an Olympic-size swimming pool, football stadium, climbing wall, gymnasium, and tennis courts.
Future developments include an education garden where children can learn road safety, a weather station, and a planetarium.
Admission and fees
Fees are much lower here than at other international schools in Thailand, and the even better news is that they will remain frozen until 2021. Tuition fees are THB 248,000 for Years 1 – 6, and THB 292,000 for Years 7 – 13.
