The high-performing BASIS group opened its first school in Thailand in 2019, bringing with it a science, technology, engineering and maths-focused curriculum.

This all-through school offering an American-style education opened in Bangkok in September 2019. Located in the Rama II area, BASIS International School Bangkok (BISB) is currently a pre-school through to Grade 6, and it will add one extra grade every year up until Grade 12.

STEM will be taught in the BISB design kitchen

This new international school is part of the US-based network of BASIS schools, which all follow a unique, college-prep BASIS curriculum. As well as being focused on science, technology, engineering, and maths, this curriculum includes humanities, fine arts, PE, and interdisciplinary studies designed to foster critical thinking skills. Also, BASIS Bangkok teaches Mandarin from Kindergarten, and then gives middle school students the option of Mandarin or another language.

"BASIS is not a purely STEM school. The curriculum also provides a very strong liberal arts programme where students are well-rounded in all subjects, from AP calculus to AP history as well as many extra-curricular activities including sports , clubs, and student-led initiatives."

The proposed sports block

The school delivers an early years' programme that "fosters an exposure to a thematic, hands-on, comprehensive, and content-rich curriculum." Students in Grades 1 – 3 have a weekly Connections Class, when they have to use creative and critical thinking skills to complete a group challenge. At high school level, BISB will eventually follow the Advanced Placement (AP) programme and offer AP exams. All senior students will also work towards graduating with a BASIS Diploma.

The BISB kindergarten

BISB is the group's fifth international school; its other schools outside the US are located in China. In line with all BASIS schools, it teaches chemistry, physics, and biology as separate courses in Grade 6; looking ahead, all students are expected to graduate with all three sciences at Honors level, and at least one AP science and one AP maths course.

Like many schools, BISB promises to "meet the individual needs of their students", and students receive two hours' every week of dedicated support in small groups or one-on-one. Also, the school promises to offer a well-rounded programme of extra-curricular activities to develop academia, business, technology and engineering, leadership, the arts, and sport.

Sports facilities will include an indoor pool

The school opened with a large, brand new campus equipped with classrooms; a 25m pool; gym; 'design kitchen' with 3D printing, woodwork, engineering, and robotics facilities; theatre; ceramics studio; dance studio; library; cafeteria; and more than 19,000 sqm of sports fields.

Admission to a BASIS school follows a multi-step selective process to "ensure we spend time getting to know our applicants, their families, and vice-versa".
