The American School of Bangkok (ASB) is very much an American-style school – the majority of teachers come from the US, followed by Canada and the UK; teaching is heavily influenced by American methods including MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing; high school students can study AP courses; and it follows the US two-semester system.
ASB has two campuses – Green Valley and Sukhumvit; the larger Green Valley campus is located in the Samut Prakan province, close to Bangkok Airport. The school offers pre-K through to Grade 12 at its modern, state-of-the-art campus in the grounds of the Green Valley Country Club, which has libraries, soccer fields, two swimming pools, tennis courts, a theatre, computer labs, and dance, music, drama, art, and video production studios; students also have access to Green Valley's golf course. Boarding facilities are available for up to 100 students from 6 years and above.
The curriculum
The rigorous American curriculum includes English, social studies, science, maths, and language arts, as well as a wide choice of elective courses including entrepreneurship, business, marketing, foreign languages, music, art, drama, IT, and design and technology. Students can take AP courses in high school, and there's a university preparation programme for students taking the SAT and iBT TOEFL tests for college/university applications.
There's also a very international and progressive angle to this all-through school. ASB offers a unique mindfulness programme to all students that focuses on self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and mental development. Also, students at the Green Valley campus have the opportunity to start learning golf at the age of 5 years, and students aged 13 – 18 can sign up after school for a training programme at the International Preparatory Golf Academy; this is Asia's only junior golf academy that offers full time golf training, full time academics, and dormitory and college placement services. The ASB team consists of a junior world champion and eight national champions, so it's fair to say that a love of this sport runs throughout the school.
The school is a member of the Bangkok International Schools Athletic Conference (BISAC), as well as the Thailand International Schools Athletic Conference (TISAC), and it fields teams in many sports.
