Jolly Phonics teaches literacy via actions for each of the 42 letter sounds. The multi-sensory method (visual and aural) is said to be very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

Using visual and aural signs, children also learn how to form and write the letters, how to blend sounds together to read and write new words, and to listen for sounds in words to improve spelling.

Children learn tricky words that have irregular spelling separately.
