Singapore Sports School Review
Founded in 2002, Singapore Sports School is the only dedicated sports school in Singapore. Focused on developing the athletes of the future, the school focuses on badminton, bowling, fencing, football, netball, shooting, swimming, table tennis, and track and field; alumni include eight Olympians and 10 World Champions, including Tao Li and Calvin Kang.
Singapore Sports School offers a six-year integrated sports and academic curriculum that leads to the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) or a Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management. Student athletes train at the school’s world-class facilities, which include a swimming complex with two Olympic-sized pools, a badminton training centre, table tennis centre, fencing hall, indoor shooting range, 12-lane bowling centre, eight-lane running track, FIFA-approved football pitch, netball courts, training areas for gymnastics and martial arts, strength and conditioning centre, and an auditorium. They receive training from experienced coaches and mentors at the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI). The sports programme also includes nutritional support, and students have the option to board on campus; selected students can attend academic classes in the evenings.
Singapore Sports School is a specialist independent school. The school’s academic programme is based on the MOE’s Singaporean curriculum, which is enhanced with sport-focused subjects including PE at GCE level and Sports, Exercise, and Health Science (SEHS) as an IB subject. The school differs from a local or international school in that it follows a modular system, with each module lasting approximately five weeks; there are eight modules in a year.
The majority of students here are Singaporean, but limited places are available for international students. Admission is based on technical skills and fitness, and scholarships are offered for international students.
