EtonHouse International School (Orchard) Makerspace

This boutique, modern campus is well-equipped to deliver its SMART programme that focuses on Science, Maths, Art, Research and Technology. Its innovative learning areas include a workshop-style Makerspace, which is used by students for timetabled lessons and during their weekly Project Time; this is based on Google 20% Time (a policy that allows employees to work on whatever they want for 20% of their time on the job).

Equipped with workshop tools, 3D printers, power tools, computers and Lego robotics kits, this makerspace is used by students from projects as varied as prototyping in the Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge through to learning about American history by using recycled materials to construct bunkhouses.

The school makes creative use of its small two-storey building, and even includes a makerspace area in the corridor – a large, wall-mounted marble maze, where students can use wood, sticks and plastic pipes to create a marble run. Whether it’s being used as a hands-on science activity or for an exciting engineering challenge, we imagine this is popular with all students.

EtonHouse says: “We have made this makerspace accessible to all children to give them the vital skills they need to get by in today’s world. Children will go from the spaghetti marshmallow challenge through to 3D printing and CAD design.”
