Hillside World Academy (HWA)

Bilingual programme: Mandarin-English
Annual tuition fees: $17,200-29,665
Age: Kindergarten to Grade 6
Highlights: Offers IB’s Primary Years Immersion Programme, all students entered into the bilingual programme

Formerly known as the Chinese International School, Hillside World Academy (HWA) has a solid track record of delivering a dual language programme in English and Mandarin since 2006. HWA teaches the IB’s Primary Years Programme bilingually from kindergarten through to Grade 6.

There’s one native Mandarin speaker and one native English speaker in each classroom, and students switch between PuTongHua, Mandarin and English throughout the school day. HWA says it focuses “on equipping our students with the mastery of English and Mandarin”.

The school says: “HWA’s Kindergarten curriculum introduces young learners to and sets the foundation for a dual language and inquiry-based framework for teaching and learning in the IB-Primary Years Programme… Our students are taught in the PYP years with teachers setting the exemplary by switching bilingually.”
