Malvern College opened its second pre-school in Island West, Hong Kong Island in August 2019 with spaces for 180 students aged two to five years.

Malvern College Pre-School (Island West) opened in August 2019 to offer a British education to children aged two to five years.

The new pre-school was the third opening for the UK public school group in Hong Kong. Malvern College Hong Kong (MCHK) opened in 2018 on a purpose-built campus in the New Territories and currently offers Years 1 – 11; Years 12-13 are due to open in 2021. Malvern College Pre-School Kowloon opened a year earlier in August 2017. In line with other schools in the Malvern family, teaching at Malvern College Pre-School Island West follows the UK’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The curriculum also incorporates the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, which views the ‘environment as the third teacher’.

A particular and unique feature of the existing Malvern Pre-School is the Forest School programme with Forest School Association-certified Forest School leaders. The Kowloon campus has commissioned land specifically for the pre-school’s use – and Island West students will have access to this as well.

Jacqueline So, co-founder and chief executive of Malvern College Hong Kong and Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong, said: “Malvern College Pre-School Island West not only offers young children an opportunity to thrive and grow in the Malvern way, it also marks another milestone in the strategic development of Malvern College’s network of schools.
“Our new pre-school is located in the heart of Hong Kong Island in a neighbourhood that celebrates cultural diversity, and which has a rich heritage, reflecting some of the key attributes of Malvern College itself. We feel this location enables us to foster a vibrant, nurturing learning environment for our students which will ultimately pave the way for them to become global citizens of the future.”

The new campus features open classrooms surrounding a central play area; a play hut that can be transformed into different settings such as a kitchen, restaurant, home, flower shop, and post office; and a reading loft. Similar to the Kowloon campus, the design of the interior spaces is centred around the theme of the natural learning environment, incorporating plants, sand, water, and sunlight into the interior.

In the academic year 2019-20, the pre-school operates half-day programmes for pre-nursery (two to three years), Kindergarten 1 (three to four years), and Kindergarten 2 (four to five years).

Students who have been attending one of the two Malvern College Pre-Schools in Hong Kong for at least one year prior to admission will have priority for assessment at MCHK.
