Kingston International School was founded in 2001 to deliver an international alternative in education to Hong Kong’s local schools. The school in Kowloon Tong, which claims to be the first school authorised in Hong Kong to offer the IB Primary Years Programme, has more than a decade’s experience of teaching the PYP to children in Years 1 – 6.
The school’s bilingual programme is what Kingston says makes it “truly unique”. Every class has one native-speaking, fully-qualified Putonghua teacher and one native-speaking, fully-qualified English teacher; all students are immersed in both languages through each school day. The school offers extra-curricular activities, such as hockey, basketball, football, phonics, drama, art, chess, martial arts, and Spanish, with Putonghua and English options available.
Kingston International School is spread across two campuses in Waterloo Road – the lower primary for Years 1 to 3 and the upper primary for Years 4 to 6. They are both small and fairly basic campuses with playgrounds, classrooms, an art room, music room, library, and an indoor hall – and perfectly sized for the school’s small total population of around 250 students. The campus is within walking distance of Kingston’s playgroup and kindergarten in Cumberland Road, and these students are given priority admission to the primary school.
Around a third of Kingston’s primary students continue their secondary education at International College Hong Kong (ICHK), where they have the advantage of priority admission.
