One of Hong Kong’s newest all-through schools, Han Academy was established in 2017 to deliver a bilingual international education. Teaching follows the Cambridge International Curriculum from Years 1 – 11, and students sit their IGCSEs in Year 10; they can then select the IBDP or A Levels for Years 12 and 13, depending on their learning needs and progress.
Han Academy is still very much in its infancy and has a small student body of 70; this lends itself to small class sizes in all years, with no more than 12 students in primary classes and up to 16 students in secondary classes. Children study in both Chinese Mandarin and English, with a decreasing use of Chinese and an increasing use of English from primary up to secondary. There’s a strong Chinese curriculum that has four branches: Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese Debate, Chinese Drama and Performance, and Chinese Library Course. As well as bilingualism, the school focuses on STEM, art, music, Chinese dance, and sport.
Han Academy has what it describes as a “modest and yet well-equipped campus” in the Southern District, with facilities including 12 classrooms, 3 science labs, 2 art rooms, music and dance studio, library, assembly hall, and indoor playground. The school uses the nearby Aberdeen Sports Ground for outdoor PE lessons.
Annual tuition fees for primary are HKD 198,000 and for secondary are HKD 208,000. Parents must also pay a debenture of HKD 2,100,000 (Individual, for one place) or HKD 3,000,000 (Corporate, for three places).
