As well as graduating with the IBDP, students at Hong Kong’s only Jewish secondary, Elsa High School, can expect to leave with a solid understanding of Jewish values and traditions.
Elsa High School is a Jewish day school offering a unique curriculum that combines International Baccalaureate programmes with Modern Orthodox principles. This secondary school for Grades 6 to 10 is popular with the Hong Kong Jewish community, although it is open to students of all nationalities and faiths.
Teaching at this well-equipped school on Hong Kong Island follows the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Grades 6 to 10 and the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) for Grades 11 to 12. The curriculum also includes Jewish studies, which teaches Tefillah (prayer), Torah text studies from the Chumash through the Tanach, Mishnah and Talmud, Halacha, Minhagim (laws and customs), Jewish ethics, and the Hebrew language. There is also a focus on Israel and its role in the history of the Jewish people.
In the school’s own words,
“Carmel is committed to teaching students about, and fostering a love for, Jewish values and traditions, and the Land and State of Israel, its language and culture.”
Elsa High School promises to deliver a well-rounded education that also includes service-based programmes, after-school programmes in creative, academic, sporting and service fields, and a competitive sports programme.
The school says,
“At Elsa we provide a unique programme integrating the best of international, religious and secular education; English, Hebrew, Mandarin, French and Spanish as languages of instruction; an international perspective rooted in Jewish ethos, philosophy and values; and a commitment to partnerships between staff, students, parents and the community.”
Elsa High School is part of the Carmel School Association family of schools, which includes Carmel Elementary School and Holly Rofe Early Learning Centre. Located in Shau Kei Wan on the east of Hong Kong Island, the facilities at Elsa High School include science labs, art and design rooms, music suites, library, 500-seat capacity auditorium, an Astroturf pitch, fitness room and conference room.
Annual tuition fees are HKD 158,000 and there is no Annual Capital Levy or debenture to pay.
