Colleen Williams, librarian at CDNIS (featured image), shares her recommended reads for children aged three to 16 years.
“As children in the early years begin and continue to develop an interest and love for reading and books, it would be highly beneficial to have children listening to stories based on those experiences that they can relate to. Early years students need to be immersed in stories that engage with members of their family, parents, brothers and sisters and the emotions that may be associated with these interactions.
“Extending from this are stories surrounding play with friends, both in and out of school. Books that focus on a particular interest of the child are great for introducing the genre of non-fiction. Above all it is important that the parent responds with as much enjoyment to the story as much as the child.”
