Chinese International School (CIS) offers a dual-language curriculum that is combined with the IB programme. At primary level, teaching follows a Positive Education model of personalised and student-centred learning, as well as other US education programmes. Most of the curriculum is delivered in both languages, and every class has an English and Chinese (Mandarin) teacher. At secondary level, teaching follows the IB’s Middle Years and Diploma programmes, and all students continue to study both English and Chinese.

A standout feature in the school’s curriculum is that all Year 10 students take part in a one-year academic and residential programme at CIS’ Hangzhou campus in China. Also, every summer, CIS collaborates with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to run a STEAM Camp. This is a popular school with a stable cohort; one-third of each graduating cohort has in recent years been at CIS since the age of four. A new leadership team joined CIS in August 2018 at the start of its 35th anniversary; the new head of school Sean Lynch was previously head at Lycée Français de New York, a leading dual-language independent school in New York City.

What the school says: “We take pride in our ground-breaking dual-language curriculum, which in recent years we have enriched with Hangzhou CIS, Positive Education, CIS-MIT STEAM camp, a programme of financial aid, and a range of Connected Learning initiatives.”
